An estimated 900 households in Thyolo have been made destitute following last week’s persistent stormy rains that destroyed their houses and other property.

Thyolo district disaster desk officer, Geoffrey Kumbuyo, told the Malawi News Agency (Mana) in an interview on Thursday the affected households are from different traditional authorities across the district.

“The stormy rains have destroyed houses in areas of T/As Chimaliro, Nchilamwela, Changata and Sub T/A Khwethemule. We received reports from village and area civil protection committees and we are planning to send a team to verify the extent of the damage,” said Kumbuyo.

He added some crops in the area of Sub T/A Mbawera have been washed away by floods and swollen rivers.

He however, could not give the hectarage of the damage.

This comes barely two months after some 1 500 houses were also destroyed by the rains associated with strong winds in Mulanje and Thyolo.—Mana
